Indian Designer Anita Dongre’s Website Crashed After Kate Middleton Wore Dress Duchess of Cambridge wore breezy bohemian dress by the designer

The Duchess of Cambridge has once again proven her fashion prowess by propelling a little-known designer to the world stage in Mumbai this week.

The U.K’s Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, are on a seven-day visit to India and Bhutan.

A few hours after they started their trip on Sunday in Mumbai, the royal couple appeared at the city’s public cricket ground, the Oval Maidan, where they met with local NGOs and played cricket with local children and Indian celebrity cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar.

But it was the Duchess’ outfit, rather than her batting skills, that caught the world’s attention.

The breezy bohemian dress introduced Indian designer Anita Dongre, who said her label “is a small brand in India,” to the world.

Ms. Dongre wasn’t aware of the princess’ wardrobe choice ahead of time, she said, seeing it first unveiled on the cricket pitch.

Kate Middleton, known for elevating underappreciated designers and high-street fashion brands, did the same for Ms. Dongre’s reputation – and website.

Within hours of the cricket event in Mumbai, Ms. Dongre’s IT staff called her in panic to say that the website had crashed as hundreds of people, presumably on a hunt for the dress logged on. Email and phone calls poured in from as far as Brazil and Australia, with most buyers calling from the U.S. and U.K., Ms. Dongre said.

The Duchess wore a modified version of the dress. A fabric belt with tassles was added from a scarf that was part of the original dress.

The original piece – inspired by motifs from Jaipur’s ancient monuments and artwork – was only last week shown as part of Ms. Dongre’s spring/summer 2016 collection.

Production for the dress was ramped up this week after it received the royal boost. Typically, Ms. Dongre’s label produces up to 200 pieces per creation but for this dress, there will be a five-fold increase in production and up to 1,000 pieces will be made.

“The factory is just producing the dress now. Everyone is focusing on that. It is all we are producing now,” Ms. Dongre said.
